Who Should Get a Flu Shot this Year?

In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. However, certain people should get vaccinated each year. They are either people who are at high risk of having serious flu complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  has developed the following guidelines to help understand just who should receive a flu shot this year. These individuals include:

  • All children aged 6 months to 18 years of age
  • Persons aged 2-65 years with underlying chronic medical conditions
  • Children 6 months-18 years of age on chronic aspirin therapy
  • Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children aged under 6 months
  • All women who will be pregnant during influenza season
  • Health-care workers with direct patient care
  • Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities
  • Adults aged 65 years of age and older
