No longer will patients and families being treated in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders have to remember the locations of the clinic, infusion rooms, playrooms, respite areas or the inpatient rooms.
The Rick Wilson Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders will house all its specialized services in one dedicated area on the seventh floor of the new hospital. The key benefit of the new design is the ability to provide a caring and healing environment in an integrated manner designed to best meet the needs of the patients and families.
Patient and Family Amenities
A central elevator bank will bring families to a warm and inviting waiting area where they can check in for clinic visits, infusions or be admitted to the unit for inpatient care. Bright, private and shared infusion rooms, two lab drawing areas, a teen center and a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit satellite pharmacy round out the center.
Designers improved the overall environment of the Rick Wilson Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders to promote infection control. Among the improvements are enclosed light fixtures to minimize dust, specially-designed shower hose placement to minimize risk of infection and non-carpeted flooring in the outpatient areas to decrease exposure to fungal agents. All rooms are built to the same standard used for severely immunocompromised patients.
Additional enhancements include parent sleeping accommodations in the BMT area; additional triage, exam and private infusion rooms; consult rooms for caregivers to meet with families, and a bone marrow transplant waiting area and work out area with good views of gardens and natural landscapes.
