Whether people want to visit the beloved kinetics ball machine relocated from the existing hospital, buy a coffee from the espresso and ice cream bar, or find the hidden visual treasures in the terrazzo floor, there is something for everyone inside Boettcher Atrium, the "family living room" that welcomes patients, families, visitors, staff and volunteers to The Children's Hospital.

The signature features of the atrium provide a regional, comfortable and fun space to gather for activities and interact with one another. Skylights and windows bathe the open space with natural light. Several local, talented artists contributed to the atrium with inspiring imagery providing visual delights for people of all ages.

Unique Art Functional Art Designed by local artist Carolyn Braaksma, the lively and bright terrazzo floor is a mesmerizing maze of colors, intricate shapes and inspiring images. As patients and families walk the floor, they will discover delightful details and imagery that sparks the imagination along the way. A butterfly with a 28-foot wing span near the front entrance welcomes visitors; a yellow star floor maze leads patients and families on a journey to the center of the design, and a Spanish healing poem engraved in the floor complements the unique masterpiece.

Discoveries a Mile High Larry Kirkland, public artist, designed the large, colorful glass wall panels on the east wall of the atrium. The decorative glass, designed on seven large, 20 by 30-feet panels, incorporates colors and other qualities unique to the hospital, the region and its diverse populations and western culture. The six panels - the night sky, ponies, butterfly play, snowflakes, suns and flowers and fishing - depict a whimsical representation of natural imagery that generates an unforgettable experience for everyone who visits Children's. Just as caregivers at Children's must continuously research and diagnose disorders and discover groundbreaking new treatments, Kirkland intended the artwork to be something for people of all ages to discover and explore continuously as well. The closer you look, the more you will see.

True Colorado Beauty John Fielder, nationally renowned photographer, publisher, teacher and preservationist, is bringing the outdoor beauty of Colorado inside for children, families, visitors and staff at the new hospital. He generously donated his beautiful Colorado photography for use in Boettcher Atrium and the Fresh Marketplace. Inside the atrium, you will find his larger-than-life scaled Bluebells, Liatris and spectacular panoramas etched on glass screens between seating areas and windows in the Family Resource Library and Gift Shop. Additionally, his photography of tall, exaggerated grove of aspens also was used on the central glass elevators in the atrium, thus transforming the common elevator experience into a floor-to-floor journey through a grove. The most stunning use of John Fielder's photos is in the flooring in the Fresh Marketplace. Be sure to visit the Fresh Marketplace during your tour!
