The Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 26-bed unit employing a collaborative approach to provide innovative, high-quality care to critically ill children and compassionate care to their families.
Located on the third floor, the PICU is flanked to the north by the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and to the northeast by the renowned Heart Institute.
The PICU team is comprised of board-certified pediatric critical care physicians, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical assistants, and inpatient service specialists, as well as a pharmacist, dietician, social worker, child life therapist, case manager and pastoral care professionals.
Patient and Family Amenities
All patients have private rooms with excellent exterior views. Reflected ceiling light throughout the PICU provides a softer, calmer environment, and acoustic ceiling tiles quiet the area by absorbing ambient sound.
A central elevator bank brings families to a warm and inviting area, where a Children's staff member guides families to their child's room and enhances security by monitoring those entering and exiting the unit.
Room amenities include an extra deep custom sofa bed for two parents, generous lockable storage, and a desk and data port.
Special amenities include a fitness center dedicated to patients for planned fitness testing, therapy, and recreational use and outdoor courtyards accessible from the third floor, one for families and one for staff.
Art and Wayfinding
ArtHouse graphic designers developed nature-focused imagery for the large, glass sliding doors at the entrance of patient rooms. As the doors open, the images overlap and weave together producing an interactive play of motion. The custom vinyl upholstery, designed in conjunction with DesignTex fabrics, features ribbons of healing plants and dragonflies.
