The Children's Hospital Heart Institute, recognized nationally and internationally for the caliber of its professionals and quality of its care, is a collaboration of the departments of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiac Intensive Care and Cardiac Research. The multidisciplinary team serves neonates, infants, children, adolescents and young adults with all forms of congenital and acquired heart disease, while providing family-centered care in support of parents and families. Patients are provided expert follow-up care into their adult years, to provide healthy hearts for a lifetime.

The Heart Institute's approach to interdisciplinary care will be further enhanced at The new Children's Hospital. Nearly all cardiology services will converge in one convenient location on the third floor, including the Cardiology Outpatient Services, two state-of-the-art cardiovascular operating rooms, two cutting-edge cardiac catheterization labs, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and pre- and post-surgical check-ins. The newly opened Cardiac Progressive Care Unit will expand to 14 private rooms, giving families a wonderful environment in which healing and recovery can occur.

Family and Patient Amenities The key benefit of the new design is the ability to create a caring and healing environment in an integrated manner designed to best meet the needs of the patients and families. The new Heart Institute design also features adjacent consultation rooms in close proximity to the reception area, surgery and procedure rooms for private communication between caregivers and families; public and private waiting areas and outdoor courtyards accessible 24/7 for patients, families and staff.

Art and Wayfinding ArtHouse graphic designers developed nature-focused imagery for the large, glass sliding doors at the entrance of patient rooms. As the doors open, the images overlap and weave together producing an interactive play of motion. The custom vinyl upholstery, designed in conjunction with DesignTex fabrics, features ribbons of healing plants and dragonflies.

The centralized caregiver desk is conveniently located for maximum visibility of all patient beds. Patients and families can find their way to the main caregiver desk by following a ribbon pattern that laces colors together in a flowing pattern on the floor. Additionally, the procedure rooms are abundant with quality natural and artificial light levels, and the rubber flooring reduces noise and relieves caregiver fatigue.
