The Surgery Center, also known as The Ponzio Surgery Center, includes 14 state-of-the-art operating rooms, four of which are oversized for operations requiring large, multi-specialty teams; 26 admit and discharge rooms; and 20 open recovery areas. Located on the second floor of the new hospital, directly above the Emergency Department (ED) and below the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the center is positioned conveniently in direct proximity to caregivers to facilitate the most efficient patient care.
Family and Patient Amenities
The new design of The Ponzio Surgery Center enhances the patient and family experience. Prior to surgery, patients can wait in the child play area brimming with arts and craft activities, games, books, television and computers. Families can escort their child into the operating suite and then greet him/her in recovery. A lactation room is connected to the waiting area for nursing mothers. Additionally, private consultation rooms are adjacent to the waiting area to facilitate private dialogue between caregivers and families.
Design
The tranquil color palette with fresh, clear, blues, greens and purples is used in conjunction with soft geometric shapes and curves to help reduce anxiety and provide a calming environment for patients and families. The child's play area features a curved ceiling of varying heights and a skylight that bathes the space in natural. An oversized flower pattern is designed into the rubber flooring of the surgery space to serve as a wayfinding guide for patients and families. Giant flowers identify each centralized nurse station and flowing vines meander through the corridors and into patient rooms. Designs that reflect regional qualities drawn from the Colorado landscape decorate the glass doors of each admit/discharge room.
