The Children's Hospital Emergency Department (ED) is equipped to handle any pediatric emergency, with appropriately sized equipment to accommodate kids of all ages. Children's is the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in the region, and our new hospital will enhance our already outstanding ED services. Our new ED features 49 clinical rooms, including a separate psychiatric area and an observation unit with five large private rooms - each with a bathroom for children who need to be observed for less than 24 hours (not admitted to hospital). The increased size will streamline the patient and family experience. Additionally, an outpatient pharmacy is conveniently located adjacent to the ED.

State-of-the-art design and equipment in the ED prepares the facility and staff to detect and respond to potential biological emergencies. The space has a separate air-handling system that can be sealed off and secured in case of large-scale emergencies.

Art Quilt Art to Add Even More Color and Comfort to ED Colorado artist Mary Williams was selected and commissioned by the art committee to provide one of her hand-carved wooden quilts and a series of large-scale wood buttons for the Emergency Department (ED) waiting area. Her inspiration comes from patterns, textures and color often found in nature. She also uses familiar objects as subject matter to create her colorful wood sculptures. The playful pieces will be displayed at eye level to give people something to discuss, explore and perhaps get their minds off of a possible stressful situation.
