A Wealth of Information for Children with Asthma

The Asthma Management Program at The Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive asthma education to families through tools such as a family action plan — designed like a traffic light with red, yellow and green zones — to help parents track their children’s symptoms and determine if rescue medication is necessary.

The red zone, or danger zone, explains what parents should do when asthma symptoms are severe. The yellow zone, or caution zone, gives parents signs to look for that may signal the asthma is becoming worse and how to control symptoms with a quick relief medication such as albuterol. The green zone, or safety zone, tells parents how to manage asthma daily, even when the child feels well, to keep the condition under control.

The action plan should be completed by the child’s medical provider. Visit www.thechildrenshospital.org for an example of an action plan, as well as more information on asthma and videos about using medication to control the condition.
