The Healing Power of Design

Radiant, healing, warm and unique. These words are used to describe The new Children’s Hospital, located near the intersection of I-225 and East Colfax Avenue. From peaceful gardens to an abundance of natural light, the hospital is designed to speed healing and improve the health of your child.

According to a recent study at the University of Texas at Austin, natural light, comforting colors and views of nature aid in the healing process of patients.

“When designing the new hospital, we recognized the role the actual building would play in the healing processes of patients, and we created a facility to maximize healing,” said Sharron van der Meulen, interior designer and principle with Zimmer, Gunsel and Frasca Architects, LLP. “From glass panels allowing natural light throughout the building to panoramic views of the beautiful Colorado landscape, almost every feature of the building has value in the healing process.”

Enhanced Amenities

Countless skylights provide an abundance of vitamin D-rich natural light, which is essential to proper body function. Children’s also contains walking paths and courtyards. These soothing and aesthetically pleasing features provide patients and their families with a place to breathe fresh air and relax.

“We creatively influenced the environment of the hospital so each person who steps in the doors is affected by the design,” van der Meulen said. “We are excited to see the results of the healing environment when the doors open September 29 and are confident our goal of enhanced healing will be successful throughout the beautiful space.”
