stay.
The diagnosis and treatment of a childhood cancer or blood disorder presents extraordinary psychological, emotional and social challenges to the entire family. Beyond the expert medical and nursing care provided at The Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders our patients and their families benefit from the support of a team of specialists in Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life (TR/CL).
TR/CL Specialists are assigned to both the inpatient unit and outpatient clinics at The Children’s Hospital. From family lunch groups to playrooms the social and emotional needs of the patient and families are cared for.
Following a diagnosis of cancer or blood disorders referred patients are provided age appropriate information about diagnosis, treatment and procedures covering what they will see, hear, feel, taste and smell. This preparation allows them to be involved and gives them a sense of control over the situation.
TR/CL specialists can accompany patients to procedures and provide support and coaching. They offer a variety of interventions that help the patient decrease pain and stress such as guided imagery, relaxation, breathing techniques and diversion activities.
Interventions on the unit and in the clinics include medical play, social activities, age appropriate developmental activities, and special events. TR/CL specialists coordinate volunteers who staff the playrooms and provide bedside activities.
As patients transition to the home environment TR/CL specialists organize support groups for parents, refer kids to camps and set up visits to schools to help a patient’s peers have a better understanding of the challenges of living with cancer.
Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life is one of the expert teams within The Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders who contribute to the excellent outcomes, comprehensive capabilities and significant research dedicated to pediatric cancer care.
