Heart Institute Treats Complex Lesions
from Practice Update, Winter 2004
Some of the more complex congenital heart lesions treated at The Children’s Hospital Heart Institute include:
- Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)
- Patent Ductus Arterios (PDA)
- Tetralogy of Fallot
- Transposition of the Great Arteries
- Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
- Coarctation of the Aorta
- Tricuspid Atresia
- Pulmonary Atresia
- Anomalous Left Coronary Artery
- Double Outlet Right Ventricle
The type of surgical repair, the timing of surgery and the risks associated with surgery are dependent of the severity of the initial anatomy and the degree of pulmonary hypertension involved. With advanced surgical techniques, many patients with complex heart lesions can expect not only to survive, but to thrive.
In addition to the most recent advancements in surgical intervention, The Children’s Hospital offers young heart patients a broad spectrum of expert medical follow-up, therapy services and family support.
