2005 Plan for the Division of Nursing

The following plan summarizes the Division of Nursing’s key priorities in 2005. These priorities are aligned with those established by the hospital Board and -administration and include specific goals and measures of success for nursing. Our mission and vision remain the same and continue to drive our actions.

Mission Statement

To practice family-centered, state-of-the-art nursing through the provision of quality patient care, education, research and advocacy.

Vision

The Children’s Hospital Division of Nursing will be a leader in professional pediatric nursing. We will -establish standards of care that will achieve the best outcomes for children and their families through a holistic, family-centered approach in partnership with others. We will be a leader in pediatric nursing practice, research, education and advocacy.

Key Priorities

Quality and Safety

Goal

TCH nursing practice will promote high-quality patient care standards and patient safety.

Metrics/Measures of Success

  • Renew JCAHO accreditation.
  • Initiate recommendations identified in the 30-day action plan by end of January.
  • Evaluate progress made on a weekly basis -starting in February.
  • Establish mechanism for constant readiness for meeting the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Patient Safety and Compliance Department and physician partners.
  • Champion/“own” the EMR/EPIC implementation for the inpatient environment.
  • Attendance by nursing leadership at national EPIC training.

Retention and Recruitment

Goal

TCH will support the best-practice environment for pediatric nursing.

Metrics/Measures of Success

  • Achieve and maintain Magnet Status.
  • Complete and submit documentation by end of March.
  • Schedule site visit during second quarter.
  • Establish plan for maintenance/enhancement of Magnet characteristics by September.
  • Enhance nursing leadership visibility.
  • Schedule routine rounds.
  • Participate in and evaluate “staying connected” forums.
  • Strengthen retention and recruitment practices.
  • Achieve 87 percent retention rate.
  • Establish strong collaborative relationship with Human Resources Department.

Research and Education

Goal

TCH Division of Nursing will be recognized as a national leader in pediatric research and education.

Metrics/Measures of Success

  • Develop strategic and operating plan for the newly merged departments of Research and Education.
  • Continue refinement of model for evidenced-based practice, incorporating measurable outcomes.
  • Collaborate with TCH Training and Development to create and evaluate an effective organizational learning system.
  • Establish strong collaborative relationship with Research Institute.

Financial Performance

Goal

TCH nursing programs will contribute to the financial integrity of the institution by efficiently and effectively managing current and future human and capital resources.

Metrics/Measures of Success

  • Implement the 2005 expense-reduction plans.
  • Meet 2005 financial targets.
  • Provide education and monthly review of -department flex budget reports with corrective action plans.
  • Utilize CHCA/NACHRI Benchmarking data to guide decision-making.
  • Establish strong collaborative relationship with -Finance Department.

This year will be a challenging and exciting year for nursing at TCH, and I look forward to much success as we continue to provide the best care for our patients and families. Thank you for all that you do to make the best care possible!
