Kohl’s and Children’s Raise Awareness for Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention
Kohl’s Department stores presents $442,063 and Kohl’s premieres a new video to help Calm a Crying Baby
Kohl’s Department Stores, through the Kohl's Cares for Kids program, presented The Children’s Hospital with a check for $442,063 on Oct. 6, 2009. Since 2000, Kohl’s has donated more than $2,500,000 to Children’s. The donations were collected from Kohl’s stores located through out Colorado.
Recently, these donations have provided funding for the Kohl’s Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Campaign, which was launched in 2006 as a partnership between Kohl’s, The Children’s Hospital, and The Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect. In addition to the check presentation, the premiere of the new video, “Crying Happens. What’s Your Plan?” was presented by Kohl’s Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Campaign. The film will be shown to new parents in birthing hospitals, to create awareness that babies do indeed cry and when they do, it is important to have a plan in place to cope with the crying.
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a serious type of brain injury that occurs when an infant or toddler is severely or violently shaken and is the leading cause of death among child abuse cases in the United States. Child abuse is the leading cause of death for children admitted to the trauma service at The Children’s Hospital, a level I pediatric trauma center.
“Tragically, more children die from child abuse than from motor vehicle accidents or falls,” said Andrew Sirotnak, MD, Director of The Kempe Child Protection Team at The Children’s Hospital.
“Shaking a baby can cause permanent brain damage, blindness, hearing loss, seizure disorders, paralysis, and even death. The good news, however, is that with proper education, this is a condition that can be prevented.” To learn more about Shaken Baby Syndrome and prevention efforts in Colorado, visit www.calmacryingbaby.com.
