Children's Wins Patient Safety Award
The Children's Hospital won a significant award recognizing the hospital's significant culture change promoting patient safety during the Nov. 14 Colorado Patient Safety Coalition Conference. The prestigious award reflected Children's commitment to the following:
- Establishment of a patient safety committee
- Establishment of the Great Catch Program
- Implementation of patient safety rounds
- Development of the post-event review process utilizing a modified SBAR approach
- Implementation of a real-time incident reporting system with built-in alerts and follow-up features that engage leadership participation in event management.
"The Children's Hospital has overwhelmed the awards committee with all the great advancements made in patient safety, and we are impressed with the comprehensive patient safety program you have established," stated Don Parsons, MD, chair of the awards committee, Colorado Patient Safety Coalition.
"Culture change is difficult in any organization, especially one the size and scope of Children's, and so it takes time and patience - two years by most expert accounts - to reach out to those involved and win their buy-in," said Teresa Fisher, MHA, BSN, RN, patient safety specialist. "Children's culture consistently supports, and is committed to, recognizing patient safety as a core value and the highest priority for the patients and families we serve."
"Since my arrival at Children's in September, I have been incredibly impressed by the level of interest in, and commitment to patient safety by our staff, faculty and management team," said Dan Hyman, MD, MMM, chief quality officer. "I am very proud of our organization for all the work that has been done which resulted in Children's receiving this award. Now, I am looking forward to our continued work making Children's the safest, most effective, and most family-centered hospital for children to receive care."
