Why Our Injury Prevention Message

  • In the United States, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under.>
  • In 1999, unintentional injuries resulted in the death of 845 children under the age of 1, 1,898 children ages 1 to 4, 1,459 children ages 5 to 9, and 1,632 children ages 10-14.
  • Every day, more than 39,000 children are injured seriously enough to require medical treatment, totaling more than 14 million children each year.
  • As many as 90 percent of unintentional injuries can be prevented.
  • The Children's Hospital and St. Anthony's Hospital, both located in Denver, Colorado teamed up to prevent injuries in children.

Our Rural Focus

Children living in rural areas are at significantly greater risk of unintentional injury-related death than children living in urban areas. They are especially at risk for motor vehicle crashes, drowning, residential fires, and agricultural-related accidents. This higher risk is due to a combination of environmental, behavioral, and economic factors, including less access to trauma care, lower use of restraints (seat belts, car seats) and a disproportionate share of people living in poverty.

The Junglemobile Project is just one part of injury prevention efforts in the Rocky Mountain Region. Other organizations have programs that share our mission.
