Gait Analysis: Check In and Physical Exam

During the physical exam, Bobbie and Kristin see how flexible
and strong Jo is.

When you first arrive at The Children’s Hospital Center for Gait and Movement Analysis (CGMA), you will be greeted and checked in for your appointment. We will have a few forms and some paperwork for you to complete before we get started with your visit that takes just a few minutes.

Next we will begin with the physical exam, which is where you will meet the physical therapist that will stay with you throughout your entire visit to CGMA. The type of information the therapist will collect includes:

  • Height, weight

  • Measurements of certain parts of your child’s body

  • Strength and range of motion at the joints, including hips, knees, ankles

  • Muscle selectivity and spasticity

  • Foot position while standing still

  • Balance in sit and stand positions

  • Sensation and skin condition

  • Child’s medical history, including orthotics, surgeries, muscle injections, etc

All of the above data will be analyzed and added to the motion data collected in the following steps when your child is walking.

Step 2: Observe and Videotape Movement
