Daniels Fund Gives $3 Million to Children’s Hospital – Denver to Establish Bill Daniels Center for Children’s Hearing

Bill Daniels.

(DENVER, June 23, 2005) – The Children’s Hospital - Denver announced today a $3 million gift from the Daniels Fund to The Imagine the Miracles Campaign, a fundraising campaign for the new hospital at the Fitzsimons campus and to support ongoing programs.

Through this gift, Children’s will establish the Bill Daniels Center for Children’s Hearing, through which deaf and/or hard-of-hearing children in Colorado can receive comprehensive family-centered care from pediatric experts in audiology, speech-language pathology, and otolaryngology.  Bill Daniels’ own hearing loss formed a strong catalyst for this gift from the Daniels Fund to Children’s.

Daniels, a pioneer in cable television, established the Daniels Fund to offer help and hope to those in need. He experienced profound hearing loss late in life, traced to his service as a decorated fighter pilot in World War II.  

The Daniels Fund will provide $2 million over 10 years to assist the Center in achieving its vision of ensuring that all deaf and hard-of-hearing children in Colorado have the opportunity to grow into healthy and dynamic citizens.  Children’s will expand  audiology, speech-language pathology, deaf education, and otolaryngology services at the main hospital, in its Children’s care centers throughout the Metro area and in other parts of Colorado so that parents will be able to find the services their children need within their neighborhoods. An additional $1 million grant will be used to help build new facilities to house Children’s hearing programs in the outpatient building of the new hospital.

Deborah Hayes, Ph.D., Chair of Audiology, Speech Pathology, and Learning Services at The Children’s Hospital, and Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Kenny Chan, M.D., Chair of Pediatric Otolaryngology at The Children’s Hospital, and Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine will co-direct the Bill Daniels Center for Children’s Hearing.
