Additional Sleep Tests at The Children’s Hospital

In addition to the sleep study, your primary care physician may order the following tests:

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An electroencephalogram, or EEG, is a study used to look at the electrical activity of the brain. For this procedure:

  • Please make sure your child’s hair is clean and free of oils and hair sprays.

  • Take all prescription medication, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

  • Eat breakfast and/or lunch, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

What to Expect:

During the EEG set-up, your child’s head will be measured and marked with a wax pencil to identify electrode placement. The skin will be cleaned with a gritty substance to remove any residual oils. All electrodes will be placed on the scalp with conductive paste and held with tape and/or gauze, which will be removed at the end of the procedure. After the electrodes are placed, you and your child will be free to leave the hospital until you report for the sleep study in the evening.

MSLT or Multiple Sleep Latency Test

This is an extended sleep study, which continues during the daylight hours. This study is done to diagnose narcolepsy. Your child will take a series of 20-minute naps, with breaks in-between to allow for meals, etc. You will be discharged from the lab no later than 4:30 p.m. Please complete a sleep log for the 2 weeks prior to your test.
