Trauma Care at The Children’s Hospital

Each year between 20-25% of all children sustain an injury severe enough to require medical attention.  The top causes of admission to The Children's Hospital Trauma Center are falls, automobile accidents, non-accidental trauma (child physical abuse), and bicycle accidents. There is no better place for the care of a critically ill or injured child than a pediatric trauma center, and The Children’s Hospital's main campus is the only Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center in the Rocky Mountain Region. A broad team of specialists are available 24 hours a day at The Children's Hospital. The Children's Hospital has treated patients from Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Missouri, Illinois, Texas and Virginia, and has consulted on pediatric trauma cases nationally.

 Services Provided

  • The Children's Hospital offers the only pediatric neurotrauma rehabilitation center in Colorado. National studies show significantly improved outcomes for brain trauma patients with early initiation of neuro-rehabilitation. At The Children's Hospital, rehabilitation can begin shortly after admission to the hospital.
  • The hospital is home to the regional center for pediatric burn care. Pediatric burn specialists and pediatric plastic surgeons specialize in the delicate surgery and particular therapy needed by young burn patients.
  • Children's houses the largest pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in the region. Private rooms and state-of-the-art equipment provide the best in family-centered care when treating trauma patients.
  • Pediatric radiologists trained in the subtleties of film interpretation for the young patient are some of the best in the country in identifying child-specific radiologic anomalies.
  • A leader in pediatric trauma education, The Children's Hospital provides continuing medical education in trauma care and safety and injury prevention education for medical professionals and community groups .
