Orthopedic Oncology

The Orthopedic Oncology Program (also referred to as the Musculoskeletal Tumor Program) at The Children’s Hospital specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of benign and malignant (cancerous) bone and soft tissue tumors in children and young adults.

Children’s is the only hospital in the Rocky Mountain region that has a specialized team of professionals dedicated to the care and treatment of childhood bone and soft tissue tumors.

Our Orthopedic Oncology Program is noted for its success with limb-sparing surgery , which allows children to preserve the function of limbs affected by Ewing’s sarcoma, osteosarcoma and other bone tumors.

Why choose Children’s for treatment of this condition?

The Orthopedic Oncology team at The Children's Hospital treats only children, teens and young adults – making us experts when it comes to caring for kids. We are committed to providing personalized service and treatment plans which include the most current surgical techniques available in orthopedic oncology.

We understand that not knowing if a child’s newly discovered tumor is benign or malignant is very stressful. With that in mind, we strive to complete all necessary tests and studies to help us make a diagnosis as quickly as possible.

For the treatment of cancerous tumors, our surgical team works closely with the pediatric oncologists at our Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, the department of orthopedic oncology at the University of Colorado, as well as the radiation oncologists at the nearby University of Colorado Cancer Center. This allows patients to receive their entire course of treatment at The Children’s Hospital. This also allows us to deliver the most comprehensive and highest quality care possible for your child. We do our best to provide our patients and their families with a seamless experience, from diagnosis to treatment to follow up care after treatment.

The Orthopedic Oncology Program has a multidisciplinary team that includes a surgeon with more than 20 years of experience specializing in orthopedic oncology, a nurse practitioner and a nurse coordinator. The team has more than 40 years of combined experience in the field of orthopedic oncology.
