Osgood-Schlatter Disease

What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

This is a common form of growing pains in the shinbone (tibia) and the knee, more often seen in an athletic, active adolescent. It is an overuse syndrome that causes knee pain, swelling and tenderness over the bony prominence of the tibia, just below the kneecap. Most often it occurs in one knee, but occasionally both with be affected. This condition may be frustrating for a child, because they may need to limit activity for a short period of time. However, it is only temporary, weeks to months, and will resolve as the bones finish growing.

Who usually gets Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

  • Athletic adolescents
  • Males 13-14 years old
  • Females 11-12 years old

What are the Symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

  • Pain, swelling and tenderness just below the kneecap at the bony prominence of the tibia
  • Knee pain worsens with activity (running, jumping and bending) and improves with rest

What is the Treatment for Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Once the diagnosis of Osgood-Schlatter disease is made, conservative treatment is initiated. The goal of treatment is to decrease the severity of pain and swelling. Treatment of symptoms includes over the counter anti-inflammatory medicines on a regular basis and wrapping the knee with an Ace bandage. Applying ice after activity will help with pain and swelling of the area. Discomfort and pain that gets worse with activity may require rest for weeks to months before returning to full activity. This modality of treatment is recommended until the adolescent can participate in activities without discomfort or pain afterwards. However, this condition often improves without formal treatment as well.
