Flexible Flatfoot

What is it?

The arch of the foot shrinks or disappears when the child stands up. This is a condition which all children have at birth. It is completely normal. As the child grows and walks, the tissues of the foot will tighten and shape the arch gradually until about 5 years of age.

What are the Symptoms of Flatfoot?

This condition is typically painless. It should not interfere with walking or playing sports. A flexible flatfoot should have normal muscle function and joint mobility. When the child is sitting or non weight bearing, a slight arch may be visible.

How is it Diagnosed?

Your child’s doctor will need to rule out other types of flatfeet that do require treatment. These types include flatfoot with a tight heel cord or a rigid flatfoot.

How is Flatfoot Treated?

Flexible flatfoot typically does not require treatment; most children will develop an arch as they grow. If the child remains flatfooted, it is completely normal as long as the child does not have pain with activity and the foot is not stiff. Treatment may be required if your child has flatfeet with tight heel cords or has activity-related pain or weakness in the foot, ankle, or leg.
