Lactation Services at The Children's Hospital

Lactation Support Service helps mothers achieve their breastfeeding goal by providing individualized breastfeeding information, consultation and support. The experienced staff helps mothers avoid weaning infants early due to problems that are either avoidable or manageable.

Lactation and Breastfeeding Problems Treated

  • Prevention and management of sore nipples and engorgement
  • Sucking difficulties that interfere with breastfeeding
  • Maintaining mother's milk and/or breastfeeding when the mother and infant are separated
  • Promotion of ample milk production
  • Breastfeeding an infant with slow weight gain or failure to thrive
  • Breastfeeding under special circumstances such as:
    • Down Syndrome
    • Cystic Fibrosis
    • Heart disease
  • Problems requiring surgery such as:
    • Cleft lip or palate
    • Cardiac defects
  • Breastfeeding more than one infant (multiple births)
  • Breastfeeding the premature infant
  • Breastfeeding while using medications or in the presence of food intolerances or allergies
  • Breastfeeding while returning to work

Lactation Services Provided

  • Certified lactation nurse clinicians
  • Breastfeeding resource center providing telephone advice, educational materials and video tapes for mothers and healthcare professionals
  • Breastfeeding supplies
  • Breast pump rental referrals
  • Consultation services, both in and outpatient
  • Inservice education for health professionals
