Clinical FAQs: Concussion
Question
When is the appropriate time to think about a referral to a neurologist, neuropsychologist or concussion clinic for a high school athlete who sustained a concussion during an athletic event?
Answer
Fortunately, concussions are better recognized, more frequently reported and better managed than ever before in young athletes. Unfortunately, concussions related to athletics are quite common, especially in females and especially in soccer players. Symptoms following a concussion may include headache, nausea, blurred vision, change in appetite and sleep, personality change, difficulties with attention and concentration, memory problems, etc. There is no specific therapy for any of these disorders. However, the majority of patients who sustain a concussion will have complete recovery within six weeks. Over 90 percent of patients have complete recovery of symptoms within three months. In general, it is recommended that one think about referral to a neuropsychologist for neurocognitive testing and counseling around six weeks to three months post-concussion if symptoms persist.
