Pediatric Heart Lung Center at The Children's Hospital

The Pediatric Heart Lung Center (PHLC) at The Children’s Hospital is a multidisciplinary program that provides a unique approach toward patient care, education, research and training in childhood heart and lung disease. We currently manage more than 120 patients with severe pulmonary hypertension either as a primary diagnosis (primary pulmonary hypertension) or an association with heart or lung disease.

Conditions We Treat

  • Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure
  • Acute and Chronic Lung Disease, including Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
  • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn
  • Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (Unexplained)
  • Pulmonary Hypertension associated with other diseases

Services Provided

  • Multidisciplinary approaches to cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders
  • Board-certified specialists in cardiology, pulmonary, and critical care medicine
  • Inhaled Nitric Oxide Program
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Program
  • Follow-up clinics for neonates treated with ECMO or inhaled Nitric Oxide
  • Professional team includes nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, and developmental specialist
  • Initiation of novel therapies for cardiopulmonary failure through the application of clinical research
  • Inpatient and outpatient care and 24-hour consultation

Pulmonary Hypertension

In particular, the PHLC currently has an active clinical care program in pulmonary hypertension. We provide consultation, ongoing care, diagnostic evaluation, and possible involvement with new clinical trials for breakthrough treatments for childhood pulmonary hypertension. Current purchases include the use of chronic Flolan therapy, Bosentan treatment, and an experimental program for the use of nitric oxide in the home.
