Adult Congenital Heart Disease
The Children's Hospital Adult Congenital Heart Clinic held at the University of Colorado Hospital serves patients over the age of 18 years with congenital heart disease. Congenital heart defects are those children are born with. Sometimes a congenital defect is not discovered until adolescence or adulthood. Adults with repaired or un-repaired congenital heart disease require ongoing management with expertise from both the adult cardiologist and the pediatric cardiologist.
An adult female with a repaired or un-repaired congenital heart defect who becomes pregnant may require specialized treatment, due to the many physiologic adaptations of pregnancy. These adaptations can have a profound effect on the course and management of cardiac disease. An organized team approach that includes cardiologists, obstetricians, geneticists and pediatricians is necessary in order to ensure the best pregnancy possible. We follow patients with congenital heart disease closely in our clinic in association with their follow-up in the high risk obstetrics clinic.
The Adult Congenital Clinic at The Children’s Hospital is staffed by pediatric and adult cardiologists with expertise in the area of adult congenital heart disease. A patient support group for individuals diagnosed with adult congenital heart disease is available through the clinic as well.
