The Children's Hospital Heart Institute Facilities
The Children's Hospital Heart Institute offers state-of-the-art technologies for testing, diagnosing and treating congenital and acquired heart disease.
Cardiac Catheterization Lab
The Children's Hospital Cardiac Catheterization Labs provide both diagnostic and interventional services. The labs have state-of-the-art equipment specially calibrated for use with infants, children and adolescents. The cardiac catheterization lab is used to determine the type and severity of a heart defect and also to treat certain types of heart defects. Over 800 cardiac catheterizations are performed at Children's each year, providing a less invasive alternative to surgery. Learn more about the Catheterization Lab at The Children’s Hospital.
Operating Rooms
The Children's Hospital has operating rooms dedicated for cardiac procedures that are not used for other medical procedures. The medical equipment is designed to care for small neonates (often premature) as well as adults with congenital heart disease. A dedicated team of specially trained operating room nurses, surgical technicians, and perfusionists work closely with the Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Anesthesiologists. Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
The Children's Hospital Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) provides state-of-the-art recovery and monitoring techniques specifically for recovering cardiac surgery patients. It is the only pediatric cardiac dedicated intensive care unit in the seven state region. CICU nurses at The Children’s Hospital are specially trained in pediatric cardiac care and work closely with your child’s cardiothoracic surgeon and cardiologist.
Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (CPCU)
The Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (CPCU) at The Children’s Hospital provides dedicated beds and nursing staff for patients who are well enough to be discharged from the CICU but are not well enough to go home. Other non-critical cardiac patients will also use this unit. Because heart problems can be very complex and difficult to manage, it is important that the nurses and staff in this area have a strong knowledge and wealth of experience of what is required for the best heart care possible. The goal of the unit is to provide patients with a seamless transition to cardiac patients and their families in the continuum of care.
