Specialized Programs
Decades of pediatric expertise and comprehensive treatment and support services make The Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders an outstanding choice for the treatment of all forms of childhood and adolescent cancers. The Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders staff provides treatment and close follow-up to more than 780 patients each year, and the clinic has more than 12,000 visits annually. As a principal member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the Center actively participates in the latest treatment protocols and collaborative research designed to improve our understanding of cancer and its treatment. We believe that better outcomes are the result of being treated in a facility with such vast experience.
With the region's most comprehensive pediatric diagnosis, treatment and support programs, the Hematology staff is internationally recognized for expertise in hemophilia, bleeding and clotting disorders, hematological diseases and immuno-hematological diseases. The pediatric components of the Mountain States Regional Hemophilia Center and the Sickle Cell Treatment and Research Center of Colorado are part of the Hematology Program.
Pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant physicians with specialized expertise in this field plus additional training in oncology, hematology and immunology, provide services essential for successful stem cell transplantation. Staff members of Clinical Social Services, Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life and Finance Counseling are also readily available to assist families.
The Neuro-Oncology Program is a multidisciplinary program founded at The Children’s Hospital in 1995. All patients are managed jointly by the multidisciplinary team. This team meets twice a month to review active and new patients and their ongoing therapy. Over 500 children with brain tumors have been treated by the Neuro-Oncology Program since its inception in 1995. The region covered by the program has gradually increased and now covers Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, much of Nebraska and western Kansas. The program is a fully participating member of the Children’s Oncology Group.
The Experimental Therapeutics Program (ETP) at The Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is committed to serving those patients with recurrent illness, those whose disease has been refractory to traditional treatment and those with a diagnosis that has no reasonable curative prospect. The medical staff of ETP offers children, adolescents and young adults access to Phase I trials and First-in-Pediatrics protocols that are available at a very limited number of institutions. As a member of the Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutics Investigators Consortium (P.O.E.T.I.C.), The Children’s Hospital ETP program is one of nine centers in the United States and Canada that can offer certain experimental therapies to patients with relapsed or refractory disease. The specific protocols open at any one time vary and eligibility criteria are strict. The Children’s Hospital ETP physicians and personnel have worked with patients from 23 states and many foreign countries.
The H.O.P.E. Clinic was created to provide support and education to childhood cancer survivors of all ages. This is becoming more and more important as many children and adolescents have survived their cancer. The Children’s Hospital was one of the first in the country to offer a clinic focused on survivorship. We are committed to helping each survivor live the healthiest and fullest life possible.
The Children’s Hospital is a leader in the field of therapeutic apheresis for a range of disorders affecting pediatric patients, including cancer, blood and autoimmune diseases. Apheresis means "to remove," and the purpose of therapeutic apheresis is to take away a component of the blood that contributes to an illness.
